Applied Mathematics in High Performance Computing in Berkeley Lab’s CCSE

-
Abstract

I will provide an overview on research activities in the Center for Computational Sciences and Engineering (CCSE) at Lawrence Berkeley Lab. CCSE is home to nearly two dozen researchers that develop cutting-edge modeling and software capabilities across a broad range of scientific fields. Current applications include multiphase flow, cosmology, astrophysics, accelerators, microelectronic circuity, and stochastic mesoscale fluids. A distinguishing feature of the problems we address is that they are multiphysics and multiscale in nature, requiring advanced numerical algorithms as well as high-performance computing resources to effectively model the problems. CCSE is also home to the AMReX software framework that has been developed to effectively perform structured grid, adaptive mesh simulations on exascale machines. I will also talk about how internships and fellowships within the National Laboratory system helped shape my career path.

Bio
Andy Nonaka is a Staff Scientist and Group Lead of the Center for Computational Sciences and Engineering at Lawrence Berkeley Lab. Dr. Nonaka was born and raised in Northern California, and graduated from both the University of the Pacific (Stockton, CA) and later UC Davis. His research focuses on the development of numerical algorithms for differential equations targeted at exascale systems. He has worked on applications in the fields of complex rheological flow, astrophysics, combustion, microfluidics, and electromagnetism. In his spare time, he enjoys competitive swimming, golf, classical piano, and activities with his kids.
