Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award

$500 estimated award amount
This award recognizes a graduate student for excellence in teaching and leadership as a teaching assistant. Applicants must:

  • be a full time student with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25
  • be enrolled in a graduate degree within the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences
  • be employed by the school as a teaching assistant and have at least 4 semesters of teaching experience including running recitation, teaching a class or assisting a qualifier course that involves review sessions

Dennis Young Graduate and Early Scholar Statistics Award

$1,000 estimated award amount
This award supports a graduate student who is interested in pursuing a PhD degree in statistics at Arizona State University. Preference is given to an applicant:

  • who has at least 18 hours of approved graduate course work completed
  • who has a minimum GPA of 3.5
  • who has passed the most recent offering of the statistics qualifying exam
  • who is demonstrating satisfactory progress in the program

Floyd L. Downs Teaching of Mathematics Fellowship Award

$500 to $1,000 estimated award amount
This fellowship provides recognition and financial assistance to an individual preparing to become highly qualified in teaching mathematics at the secondary school level in a manner which enhances understanding, reasoning ability and achievement. Applicants must:

  • be enrolled in a graduate program in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences
  • be a full time student with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25
  • exhibit a depth of understanding and a passion for mathematics (express in Personal Statement)
  • Career experiences such as a secondary math teacher returning for an advanced degree or a person seeking a career change will be considered in the selection

Graduate Student Research Award

$1,000 estimated award amount
This student award recognizes the creative research achievements of our graduate students by making a monetary award for outstanding work. Evidence of creative research includes:

  • accepted or submitted research publications
  • research presentations at national or international conferences
  • a written report of preliminary research findings which may consist of a draft of thesis work
  • a copy of the final doctoral dissertation, if completed

Robert G. Maule Excellence in Teaching Mathematics Award

$500 estimated award amount
This award recognizes a graduate student for excellence in teaching as a teaching assistant. Applicants must:

  • be a full time student with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25
  • be enrolled in a graduate degree within the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences
  • be employed by the school as a teaching assistant
  • have demonstrated teaching-experience and a passion for mathematics, preferably for teaching mathematics and mentoring students in their studies
  • Selection committee may also consider qualified teaching assistants who face circumstances similar to those experienced by Robert Maule. This may include students who have the challenge of returning to school after working or as part of a career change, and/or students who may have a disability that may inhibit mobility or present challenges but does not prevent involvement in the teaching mathematics (if applicable, students should explain in their Personal Statement)
