Degree qualifications

Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Applicants are eligible to apply to the program if they have earned a bachelor's or master's degree in mathematics or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution as well as coursework in linear algebra (equivalent to ASU course MAT 342 or MAT 343) and advanced calculus (equivalent to ASU course MAT 371).

Applicants must have a minimum of a 3.00 cumulative GPA (scale is 4.00="A") in the last 60 hours of a student's first bachelor's degree program, or applicants must have a minimum of a 3.00 cumulative GPA (scale is 4.00="A") in an applicable master's degree program.

All applicants must submit:

  1. graduate admission application and application fee
  2. official transcripts
  3. statement of education and career goals
  4. resume
  5. GRE (general) scores
  6. three letters of recommendation
  7. proof of English proficiency

Additional Application Information
The University requires all international applicants from a country whose native language is not English to provide proof of English proficiency.

How to apply

You can apply online to the graduate program and can check your application status with Graduate Admissions by using MyASU. Your privacy is protected by the use of an ASURITE User ID and password. If you are new to ASU, your ASURITE User ID and instructions for its activation can be found on your application acknowledgement letter. If you need the application materials mailed to you, contact the Graduate Admissions office.

The following items are required before an application is considered complete and ready for review.

  • on-line application to Graduate Admissions.
  • application fee to Graduate Admissions.
  • Send official transcripts to Graduate Admissions from all institutions you have attended. Keep in mind that your sending institution will take several days to send out your transcripts. It may take a week or two for your transcripts to arrive at ASU.
  • International students must submit an official TOEFL score to Graduate Education. See Graduate Admissions for English Proficiency Requirements. The Graduate College requires a minimum TOEFL score of 80 for admission.
  • Three letters of recommendation. You will be asked to submit the names and email addresses of three (3) references on your online application form.
  • Submit a personal statement that specifically addresses your research interests and goals for graduate school.

Application Status

Due to the number of applications we receive, you will not be notified by the school until a decision has been made on your application. You are encouraged to check your application status on MyASU or e-mail grad.math@asu.edu. Include your name and ASU ID number on all correspondence to the school.
