Struggles of International, ESL, and SAILS students in college and high school

Abstract

Panel Talk: Philip Doi and Iuliia (Julia) Inozemtseva

We will talk about numerous struggles that international, ESL (English as Second Language) and SAILS students face in American classrooms. Many of these struggles inevitably arise from Instructors’ teaching methods - from overly complicated word problems to group work with lack of support or cultural understanding. These and other aspects of students' struggles contribute to their isolation in school and their Impostor Syndrome. Awareness of these issues will help to create a supportive environment, and promote diversity and inclusion in classes.
