When Research in Mathematics Education and Community Colleges Intersect: Carving My Own Path

-
Abstract

The role of faculty at community colleges is certainly focused on teaching, but improving instructional practice needs to stem from research. And who better to conduct research for the purpose of improving the teaching and learning of mathematics than faculty entrenched in the classroom? This talk will focus on my unique journey as I navigate through research and community college teaching!

Bio
April Strom has taught mathematics at the community college level for over 25 years. She is currently the PI for the NSF-funded Teaching for Prowess project and served as the Principal Investigator for the NSF-funded Mathematics and Science Partnership project titled the Arizona Mathematics Partnership ($9M). Strom received her Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction (emphasis in Mathematics Education) from Arizona State University. The focus of her dissertation research was on secondary teachers’ understanding of exponential functions and the development of a conceptual framework for analyzing knowledge of exponential functions.
