It's easy to come up with examples of mathematical and statistical techniques for analyzing data that can help solve real-world problems, but it's less obvious how the development of theory can translate to real-world impact. We'll talk through a couple of examples, discuss the ecosystem of math/stats researchers in real-world efforts, and walk through a few ways one might prepare for a career in these sorts of roles.
