Abstract

The purpose of this talk is to give my perspective on the roles of some useful mathematical and statistical tools for working on data science problems.  The themes of the talk will focus on the main objectives of the RTG program: statistics, computational math (optimization), and harmonic analysis.  I will attempt to keep the details at bay and focus on the bigger picture. A famous parameter selection problem for inverse problems will serve as a motivating example throughout the talk.
