Join AWM at ASU on Tuesday, May 12, at 4:00pm for a virtual film screening party of the documentary film "Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani" via Vimeo, and participate in a group chat and post-viewing discussion via Zoom.

This is part of the international Celebrating Women in Mathematics Day, held on May 12, which is Maryam Mirzakhani's birthday. The goal of the day is to inspire women everywhere to celebrate their achievements in mathematics, and to encourage an open, welcoming and inclusive work environment for everybody.

In order to join our AWM-hosted screening and discussion, you need to do three things.

1. Complete the link below to register yourself with the international women's group for an individual screening link via Vimeo:

For "Type of screening" - enter "Individual"
For "Date and Time of screening" - enter "May 12, 2020"
For "Place of projection" - enter "USA, Arizona"
For "Organizer name" - enter "AWM Student Chapter at Arizona State University" or "AWM at ASU"

After you register, you will receive an email with a screening link that you will use to watch the film via Vimeo on your computer or device.

2. Complete the AWM event registration form so we know you plan to participate in this virtual viewing party via Vimeo, and to obtain the Zoom link so you can participate in the Zoom group chat and post-viewing discussion:

3. On May 12 at 4:00pm, use the Zoom link provided by AWM at ASU for the virtual screening group chat and post-viewing discussion, and use the Vimeo link you obtained by completing step one to virtually view the film via Vimeo.

You will have two different links going at the same time on your computer or device. One is the Vimeo link to playback/view the film at the same time as everyone else in our group, and the other is the Zoom link so you can use Zoom chat during the screening as well as discuss the film afterwards with others who just viewed it. You can, for example, call up the Zoom meeting on your smartphone, and the Vimeo film screening on your larger laptop or desktop computer screen (or whichever two devices you prefer). Or you can use a single device/computer and open two tabs or two windows or use two monitors. It depends on the setup you have available to you at your home or office location.

For more details about the film, watch the preview, or read the synopsis on the Zala Films webpage.

Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani

a documentary film by George Csicsery

Filmed in Canada, Iran, and the United States, Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani examines the life and mathematical work of Maryam Mirzakhani, an Iranian immigrant to the United States who became a superstar in her field. In 2014, she was both the first woman and the first Iranian to be honored by mathematics’ highest prize, the Fields Medal.

Mirzakhani’s contributions are explained in the film by leading mathematicians and illustrated by animated sequences. Her mathematical colleagues from around the world, as well as former teachers, classmates, and students in Iran today, convey the deep impact of her achievements. The path of her education, success on Iran’s Math Olympiad team, and her brilliant work, make Mirzakhani an ideal role model for girls looking toward careers in science and mathematics.
