The December, 2007 Problem of the Month

On the twelfth day of Christmas, 
my true love sent to me 
Twelve drummers drumming, 
Eleven pipers piping, 
Ten lords a-leaping, 
Nine ladies dancing, 
Eight maids a-milking, 
Seven swans a-swimming, 
Six geese a-laying, 
Five golden rings, 
Four calling birds, 
Three French hens, 
Two turtle doves, 
And a partridge in a pear tree! 

How many gifts did my true love send to me on the twelfth day of Christmas?

How many gifts did my true love send to me in total (total sum of gifts over days 1-12)?

Find a general formula for the total number of gifts given in terms of n for the n days of Christmas. The pattern is assumed to be 1 gift the first day, 1 + 2 gifts on day 2, etc.
