Course Description: In this class, we will study techniques in the design and validation of concept assessment instruments (building a general Calculus Concept Assessment in the process), continue to refine research projects from RUME III, and study previous research results, theoretical perspectives, and conceptual frameworks relevant to research in undergraduate mathematics education.

Grades: Grades will be based on successful completion of the five semester-long tasks at the center of this class:
  1. Production of a publishable research paper in undergraduate mathematics education.
  2. Significant contribution to the refinement of the Precalculus Concept Assessment and the development of the Calculus Concept Assessment.
  3. A synthesis of the research literature on some topic in undergraduate mathematics education.
  4. A review of a theoretical perspective relevant to research in undergraduate mathematics education.
  5. A review of a research-based framework for a concept in undergraduate mathematics.
For item 1, you will submit an electronic copy of a manuscript to me. I will act as an editor of a journal and send your paper out for review by two of your peers (classmates) then compile their feedback in making the decision whether to "accept" your paper. If you want a chance to "revise and resubmit" should your paper not be accepted, you should submit your first version by April 11. Items 3, 4, and 5 will involve a written paper (~6 double-spaced pages each) and a short oral presentation followed by comprehensive exam level questions on the topic. Everyone in the class will also be responsible for reading and commenting on all papers by the other classmates. I will make an initial assignment of topics based on your paper draft from RUME III. If you want to work on different topics, let me know as soon as possible and we can discuss possibilties. You are responsible for the timely completion of these requirements. I recommend completing some early in the semester as we will be limited to about 3 presentations in any one class period.

Grades will be assigned as follows:
A
Completion of all 5 requirements
B
Completion of 4 of the 5 requirements
C
Completion of 3 of the 5 requirements
D
Completion of 2 of the 5 requirements
E
Completion of fewer than 2 of the 5 requirements
