{\bf Homework}

\noindent
Homework questions will not, in general, be addressed in the workshop,
and assignments will be collected at the beginning of class. While
working the assignments, however, you will become stuck from time to
time. {\bf Your first and most valuable study resource is
collaboration with the other members of the workshop.} When you have
exhausted this possibility you should see Dr. Davis or come to Chris
and me.

\bigskip
\noindent
{\bf Attendance}

\noindent
This workshop has been designed as a small class centered around group
work on challenging problems. Therefore, the commitment you have
made to attend each workshop is vital to our success. We recognize
that emergencies arise, however, and there will be times when you can
not make it. In these cases, you should make great effort to let me
know about the situation at least a day in advance. (A phone call or
email message is appropriate.) If this is not possible, please send a
message with another member of the class. At any rate, {\bf to
receive credit for the workshop, you must have no more than three
unexcused absences}.

\medskip\noindent
You will be responsible for completing the worksheet for any missed
days.

\bigskip
\noindent
{\bf Projects}

\noindent
In addition to attendance, a two-part project is required for credit
in the workshop. The project will involve the analysis of a
differential equation (or system of equations) that comes from a
problem in your area of study. Most of you will take differential
equations next semester and this is an opportunity to preview the
material. You will write a paper which describes the problem you
selected and which justifies the mathematical model (i.e., the
equations) used to solve it. The second part of the project is an
oral presentation to the class covering the material in your paper.
As an alternative to this, you may write a second paper detailing the
solution of the differential equation(s) you have studied. Following
is a time-line for this project:

\medskip
\noindent
Immediately - Begin discussions with a professor in your field of
study to select a topic.

\smallskip
\noindent
Friday, February 20 - One paragraph description of the problem you
have selected is due

\hskip1.05in(to be approved by Mike).

\smallskip
\noindent
Friday, March 13 - Rough draft of paper due.

\smallskip
\noindent
Friday, April 10 - Final version of paper due.

\smallskip
\noindent
Monday, April 20 through Friday, May 8 - Presentations.
