Student Assistant: Chris Jackson

\medskip
\noindent
The Math 210 Emerging Scholars Workshop is attached to Dr. Davis's
Math 408C Calculus class. The goal of this program is to enrich your
Calculus experience in a way which is not possible in the format and
expectations of a traditional discussion section. To this end, we
will be asking much more of you as an emerging scholar.

\bigskip
\noindent
{\bf Homework}

\noindent
Homework questions will not, in general, be addressed in the workshop,
and assignments will be collected at the beginning of class. While
working the assignments, however, you will become stuck from time to
time. {\bf Your first and most valuable study resource is
collaboration with the other members of the workshop.} When you have
exhausted this possibility you should see Dr. Davis or come to Chris
and me.

\bigskip
\noindent
{\bf Attendance}

\noindent
This workshop has been designed as a small class centered around group
work on challenging problems. Therefore, {\bf the commitment you have
made to attend each workshop is vital to our success}. We recognize
that emergencies arise, however, and there will be times when you can
not make it. In these cases, you should make great effort to let me
know about the situation at least a day in advance. (A phone call or
email message is appropriate.) If this is not possible, please send a
message with another member of the class. At any rate, {\bf to
receive credit for the workshop, you must have no more than three
unexcused absences}.

\bigskip
\noindent
In addition to attendance, there are three requirements for credit in
the workshop: a weekly homework problem, and two projects. These are
described below.

\bigskip
\noindent
{\bf Problem of the Week}

\noindent
Each week, I will assign a challenging problem. For this, you are
encouraged to work together, although you must hand in your own
write-up. If your solution needs more work, I may give a hint and ask
you to redo the assignment.

\bigskip
\noindent
{\bf Projects}

\noindent
For both projects, you will work in a team with one or two other
members of the class.

\medskip
\item{1.} {\bf Study Guide:} Your team will be given roughly 4
lectures for which you will prepare a study guide from your lecture
notes and the text. These will be distributed to the entire workshop
before each test.

\medskip
\item{2.} {\bf Research Project:} Every two weeks, a different team
will be assigned a research project that pertains to the material
being covered in lecture at that time. During the two weeks of your
project, you will need to meet with your partner every day. At the
end of that time, you will turn in a written report to me and give a
presentation to the class. More details will be discussed as the
research projects are assigned.
