Announcements

15 Dec 2006
I've posted final grades and final exam scores.
29 Nov 2006
I have posted a final review sheet (.pdf, 70K) for your use in studying for the final exam.

Coursework

There will be 15 homework assignments, due each Tuesday at the start of class. Late homework (i.e. homework turned in after the start of class) will not be accepted, but the lowest 3 of your homework scores will be dropped.

Students are encouraged to work together on the homework and practice problems, but you are required to write up and turn in the assignments individually. Homework should be neat, complete, concise, labelled, and stapled (it may take one or more drafts to achieve this); illegible or incomprehensible work will not get credit. Your solutions should include explanations and show work, not just give "yes" or "no" or numerical answers.

We will have three 75-minute in-class midterm exams, and a comprehensive final exam. The exam dates are listed on the syllabus.

Grading

Homework problems are graded out of 6 points, as described below. Notice that a perfect score doesn't imply a perfect solution, and fully half credit is awarded simply for an honest effort. Regardless of your score, it should be useful for you to compare your work with my solutions.

6   Correct or basically correct
5 Mostly good work, with some problems
4 Some good work, but some fundamental problems
3 Honest effort but little else
0 No effort, wrong problem, trivial solution, or no work shown

Final grades for this course will be assigned according to the following scheme:

Homework 60 points
Midterm Exams   55 points each
Final Exam 75 points
Total 300 points

A grade of incomplete will be awarded only in the event that a documented emergency or illness prevents a student who is doing acceptable work from completing a small percentage of the course requirements. The guidelines in the current general ASU catalog regarding a grade of incomplete will be strictly followed.

Web Resources

I will post homework and exam solutions throughout the semester. Access is restricted to students currently enrolled in this course. To log in, use your last name (in capital letters, including hyphens if applicable) for User ID, and your student number (all 9 digits, no hyphens) for Password. To view the solutions, you may also need to install the free Adobe Reader.

Sample exams can be gotten from my past course web sites. Note that those old exams did not always cover exactly the same material as ours will.

Grades will be posted by Posting ID number. This number is comprised of the last four digits of your Affiliate ID number, followed by the last three digits of your ASU ID number. The Affiliate ID number is the ten-digit number on your Sun Card; the ASU ID number is the nine-digit one.

Make-Up Policy

No late homework will be accepted. Late homework which is not too late may be graded, to provide feedback, but the scores will not be counted.

Make-up midterm exams will be given at my discretion, primarily in the case of a verified medical or other emergency, or a conflicting university-sanctioned activity. When possible, I should be notified before the exam is missed, the make-up should be taken as soon as possible, and adequate documentation must be provided before the make-up score will be counted. Students participating in university-sanctioned activities need to identify themselves prior to missing class and provide me with a copy of their travel schedule before arrangements will be made to make up missed work.

Exceptions to the final exam schedule and requests for make-up finals cannot be granted by me. Please refer to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics final exam policy for details.

Honor Policy

The highest standards of academic integrity are expected of all students. The failure of any student to meet these standards may result in suspension or expulsion from the University, or other sanctions as specfied in the University Student Academic Integrity Policy. Violations of academic integrity include, but are not limited to: cheating, fabrication, tampering, plagiarism, or facilitating such activities.
