ABSTRACT

Title:  Models for Influenza with Crossimmunity

By:    Carlos Castillo-Chavez, Department for Mathematics and Statistics

We just went through another flu epidemic and have seen the number of cases of chickens infecting humans increased over the past couple of years--in at least three continents. Discussions are under way to decide which strains to include on the "next" flu vaccine. Crossimmunity and vaccination have a lot in common and I will highlight the reasons behind this statement. In addition, I will discuss past efforts to incorporate the effects of crossimmunity on dynamic epidemic models at the population level. Finally, I will present the results that Miriam Nuno has obtained in collaboration with Maia Martcheva, Zhilan Feng and myself on the impact of crossimmunity and quarentine on "flu" dynamics.
