Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy



Computational Biosciences PSM Students

    Year 1:
    • Complete any academic deficiencies by the end of students first year in program or by date stated on letter of admissions.
    • Establish your committee members no later than end of second semester.
    • An online program of study (iPOS) must be filed by the end of Semester 2.
    Year 2:
    • Finish internship (applied project) and all coursework by semester 4.

Computational Biosciences PhD Students (From BS Level)

    Year 1 & 2 :
    • Students will be regarded as making satisfactory progress provided that they complete either the core components of the degree, or the 12 hours of graduate study requirement in mathematics by the end of year 1- course list, with average GPA of 3.75.
    • They must complete both of these requirements before entering their third year of study in the program.
    Year 3:
    • Students must complete their comprehensive written exam based on 6 credit hours of 500 level courses, excluding the core CBS 520/521/530 courses.
    Year 4:
    • Students should submit their written prospectus.
    year 5:
    • Defend thesis.

Computational Biosciences PhD Students (From PSM - standard policy- dependent on background an alternative individualized policy may be determined)

    Year 1:
    • Student must complete the 12 hours of graduate study requirement in mathematics -see course list:
    Year 2:
    • Students must complete their comprehensive written exam based on 6 credit hours of 500 level courses, excluding the core CBS 520/521/530 courses.
    Year 3:
    • Students should submit their written prospectus.
    Year 4:
    • Defend thesis.

Policy for all CBS Students:

  • Students must maintain an average 3.0 GPA at all times. All students must maintain a 500 level GPA of at least 3.00.
  • Students should submit their program of study by the end of the second year of study.
  • All students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 on all courses included on their program of study.
  • All course "Incompletes" must be completed no later than 1 semester after the course was originally taken.
  • An extra PhD year is granted ONLY if the advisor guarantees the student will finish.
  • A student entering with an MA degree from a non-mathematics MA or MS degree may follow the guidelines for a PhD entering from a BS degree.

Plagiarism/cheating are grounds for immediate recommendation to the Graduate College for students dismissal from the program. If the policies above are not satisfactorily met; the following actions will result:

  1. Meeting with the program director will be scheduled to discuss unsatisfactory work.
  2. Follow-up letter will be sent to student outlining unsatisfactory work and probationary status, plan of action to regain satisfactory progress within the program and deadline for plan of action.
  3. Follow-up meeting with program director to re-evaluate probationary status upon deadline for students plan of action.


* Failure to make satisfactory academic progress based on the conditions listed can result in recommendation to the Division of Graduate Studies for withdrawal from the degree program.

* These guidelines supersede any previous requirements in the graduate program.
