Message From the Chair
![]() It is an exciting, and challenging time, with striking advances being made in mathematical research. At the same time, we realize the fundamental necessity that an institution's commitment to research must be accompanied by a commitment to excellence in the instructional program. The two are inextricably intertwined. At ASU, you will find instruction at the highest level, from freshman courses through calculus to the most advanced graduate courses. We have a direct and active role in preparing the next generation of teachers for our local schools: it is our job to see that the teachers of our children are imbued with our own enthusiasms! Mathematics formed the classical quadrivium within the original seven Liberal Arts. It has been studied in centuries past less for the current vocational tendency, but rather for the intrinsic training of the mind, and for the sheer intellectual beauty of the subject. In today's world, one can still appreciate the elegance whilst at the same time deriving an education that fully prepares one for an exciting career, where so many employers, now as never before, demand the skills that come with mathematical training. Full details of the Mathematics Department are provided on this website. If you have questions about any aspect of the program that is not addressed, or simply want further information, or wish to be added to the Department mailing list, please e-mail me at armbruster@asu.edu. |
