Andre Mackey ScholarshipThe Andr\x{00E9} Levard Mackey Scholarship is given in honor of Andr\x{00E9} Levard Mackey, who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics at ASU in May 1989. Andr\x{00E9} passed away on May 22, 2000 in Phoenix, Arizona at the age of 39. The Mackey Scholarship is funded by gifts from the Mackey family. The intent and purpose of this Scholarship is to assist the university in recruiting and retaining students who will contribute to the achievement of diversity in the student population of Arizona State University. Andr\x{00E9} was always interested in math. He developed a fascination with computers as he went through school. His high school years were in the Phoenix area, including attendance at Dysart High School and in 1979, graduation from Moon Valley High School. In addition to his math courses, Andr\x{00E9} took many courses in computers, engineering and science at Arizona State University. In April 1982, Andr\x{00E9} was inducted into Tau Beta Pi, in recognition of exhibiting distinguished scholarship and exemplary character while a student at ASU. In November 1982, he became a member of the Upsilon Pi Epsilon Honor Society in the Computing Sciences. Andr\x{00E9} was also a member of the Arizona Council of Black Engineers. Andr\x{00E9} had a successful career in engineering. He worked at Motorola for a number of years and worked at Semy Engineering, Inc. for ten and one-half years. As Manager of the Communications Controllers Group at Semy, Andr\x{00E9} was an effective manager and leader. Semy Engineering, Inc. has also honored Andr\x{00E9} by establishing an award in his memory that will recognize an employee who works hard and serves as an inspiration, thus exemplifying Andr\x{00E9}'s qualities and talents so admired by his colleagues. The recipient of the award should be an undergraduate mathematics major with financial need and a good academic record. The recipient should have an interest in computers and an appreciation of their role in contemporary mathematics. The amount of the scholarship for Fall 2005 is $500. |
