Undergraduate Research AwardSometimes a student is especially attracted to the subject matter of one of his courses. It is often the case that the instructor is willing to direct a research project in this area that would be suitable for an undergraduate student. A student can register for MAT 494 (Special Topics: Undergraduate Research in Mathematics) in order to get academic credit for the project. Honors credit can be obtained through MAT 493 (instead of 494). The Department of Mathematics and Statistics wishes to recognize those students who do an especially good job by awarding one or more Undergraduate Research Prizes each Spring consisting of approximately $500. To qualify, a project normally would be completed prior to the given Spring semester under either MAT 494 or MAT 493. The Mathmatics Department Awards Committee will issue invitations to apply for the prize to students who have been recommended by their supervisors. Students whose projects have been funded by research scholarships will not be eligible for the prize. |
