Core Undergraduate Courses

Calculus

  • Math Science Honors Program
MSHP is an intense academic program that provides motivated high-school students an outstanding opportunity to begin university mathematics (in particular Calculus I and II), science, and engineering studies before graduating high school.

  • Calculus Placement Test
A mandatory test to place into the first semester of Calculus (MAT270, MAT265 or MAT251)

  • Calculus with Analytic Geometry MAT270, MAT271, MAT272
for math and some liberal arts majors (4 credit hours each)
  • Calculus for Engineers MAT265, MAT266, MAT267
for engineering majors (3 credit hours each)
  • Calculus for Life Sciences MAT251
for Life Sciences majors (3 credit hours)
Students who wish to become math majors after they have completed one or several courses in the Engineering or Life Sciences tracks need to make up the missing credit hours. If 1 or 2 credit hours are missing a corresponding number of credit hours must be taken in MAT294 Special Topics Sophomore Problem Seminar. If 3 credit hours are missing (i.e., you took the engineering sequence prior to switching to math) you will need to take MAT362 Advanced Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists.

Mathematical Structures

  • Discrete Mathematical Structures MAT243
for BA math majors (also counts as additional course for BS majors)
  • Mathematical Structures MAT300
for all math majors. This pivotal course is about proof writing and satisfies the College Literacy [L] requirement.

Elementary Differential Equations

  • Elementary Differential Equations MAT274
counts as additional course for math majors (except BS-CMS) and some liberal arts majors (3 credit hours)
  • Modern Differential Equations MAT275 (with Matlab)
for all majors (required for BS-CMS Math majors and Engineers, 3 credit hours). The lecture is given at least once a week in a computer lab.

Linear Algebra

  • Linear Algebra MAT342
for math, liberal arts, and some engineering majors (3 credit hours). This is an introduction to the theory of linear transformations and operators, and their matrix representations. No lab.
  • Applied Linear Algebra MAT343
for all majors (required for BS-CMS Math majors, 3 credit hours), a more applied version of MAT342 focusing more on numerical aspects and practical computations and applications. Matlab or some other programming language is used occasionally to illustrate implementation and use of algorithms. The lecture is given at least once a week in a computer lab.
Further Calculus for math majors

  • Intermediate Calculus MAT370
    for BA math majors
  • Advanced Calculus I & II MAT371 & MAT372
    for all BS math majors
