Dr. Gardner's research involves applications of fluid dynamics and kinetic theory to transport in
astrophysical, biological, and semiconductor device settings. He is especially concerned with numerical
methods for nonlinear hyperbolic and hyperbolic/parabolic/elliptic PDE systems, extending high-order
upwind methods from gas dynamics to more complex hydrodynamic equations. Recent applications
include the modeling and simulation of high Mach number astrophysical jets with radiative cooling and
of ionic charge transport in biological channels and nerve cells.
