The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at Arizona State University is excited to announce its new Ph.D. program in Applied Mathematics. ASU has faculty in applied mathematics with outstanding interdisciplinary research programs and strong external funding. Current research interests include:
The curriculum builds a strong foundation in applied mathematics and allows the flexibility of interdisciplinary learning and research. The program further encourages interdisciplinary activity by offering students the opportunity to choose dissertation advisors from outside the school. Current members of the graduate faculty in applied mathematics come from the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, electrical, industrial, aerospace and mechanical engineering, and from the biological, physical, chemical and geological sciences.
Students making satisfactory academic progress in the applied mathematics Ph.D. program can receive five years of financial support either as teaching or research assistants. The stipends are competitive. Summer assistance is also available.
Applicants must submit the Graduate College online application. Minimum background for consideration of admission to the Ph.D. program in applied mathematics includes a bachelors degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, economics, engineering or a natural science in a regionally accredited university with at least a 3.00 GPA (4.0 scale). Students must be competitive in an applicant pool as evidenced by course work in linear algebra (equivalent to ASU course MAT 342) and advanced calculus (equivalent to ASU course MAT 371), letters of recommendation, and a statement of educational and career goals. The general GRE is required. Scientific programming skills are also desirable.
