Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award

In the Spring semester of 2005 the Department initiated a new award for Teaching Assistants who show exceptional performance in the classroom, Tutor Center and in the ASU graduate community. The "Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award" is given to 5 Teaching assistants each semester. This award gives an opportunity for the faculty to thank the TAs for their exceptional work over each semester.

The TA training Committee used the following indicators in their decision when selecting who would be awarded:

  • Evaluation from FYM faculty visit
  • Student evaluation indicators: Q5 (students' trust in the knowledge of the instructor) and Q14 (overall grade) and what % of registered students filled out the evaluations
  • Success rate for the class (compared to a department average of success rate in the same class)
  • If the TA is teaching a special class (calculus sequence course or MTE course or STP course)
  • If the TA had an excellent record in working in the Tutor center
  • TA's activity in the TA seminars (Fall seminar for new TAs, TA research seminars for returning TAs) and/or participating in PFMF (Preparing Future Math Faculty program)
  • If TA was helping out with summer TA training
  • TA's involvement with TA activities (such as Leader of OOGSIM,organizing social events, TA research seminars...etc)
