Maule Teaching AwardThis year our department has a new award for excellence in teaching by a teaching assistant. The "Robert G. Maule Excellence in Teaching Mathematics Award" has been established by Elaine Maule as a tribute to her late husband. Robert G. Maule was an actuary, a principal with Milliman USA, for 22 years. He was a member of the Society of Actuaries and received many honors during his career. He eventually returned to school to pursue a Ph.D in mathematics in our department. He received an M.A. in mathematics in May 2002. His health prevented him from reaching his ultimate goal of a Ph.D. Robert Maule passed away on July 1, 2004. As a graduate student, Robert was involved in the ASU Actuary Club. He identified graduate students who were in need of additional tutoring and mentoring and provided essential help to them so they could succeed in earning their degrees. Although Robert could not continue his studies due to ill health, this did not discourage him from doing his best to help these students achieve the goal he had set for himself. Many of these students attribute their success to his unwavering commitment to help them. Thus the establishment of an award in Robert's name to carry on his passion for mathematics is a fitting tribute for a man who made a difference in many lives. |
