The Graduate Research Award Program

Each semester the Department of Mathematics and Statistics seeks to recognize the creative research achievements of its graduate students by making a monetary award of $1000 for outstanding work. Evidence of creative research may consist of accepted research publications, research presentations at national or international conferences, a draft of the doctoral dissertation or a copy of the final doctoral dissertation (if completed).

The department's Awards Committee will be responsible for selecting each semester's winner. Previous winners of the award are ineligible.

Candidates for the awards must be nominated according to the following guidelines:

  1. A candidate for the award must be nominated by his/her advisor.
  2. An advisor may nominate only one of his/her advisees.
  3. The candidate should obtain letters from two faculty members providing background and significance of the research and the student's role in the creation of the research. One letter should come from the advisor and the other from someone mutually acceptable to the advisor and advisee.
  4. A faculty member may write a letter of reference for only one nominee in a given semester.
  5. The research results submitted by a student for consideration must have been obtained while attending ASU. Work done at other institutions does not qualify.

If an advisor chooses to nominate one of his/her advisees, the name of the candidate should be given to the Department Graduate Office as soon as the decision is made. Then the following items should be delivered to the Department Graduate Office (PSA 226) by the appropriate deadline (see below):

  1. The two letters of reference.
  2. At least one of the following:
    1. A copy of the publication or manuscript and statement of its current status (published or accepted).
    2. A conference abstract and a written report of the research presented at the conference.
    3. A draft of the doctoral dissertation.
    4. A copy of the final doctoral dissertation (if completed).

Deadlines for submission are:

November 1 for the Fall semester (Winner announced by Dec 1).
April 1 for the Spring semester (Winner announced by May 1).

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics maintains a plaque listing all of the recipients of this award.
