Welcome to the Graduate Program in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
The Department of Mathematics offers graduate study
leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Master of Arts (M.A.) in many areas of mathematics. In particular, the department has
strengths in algebra, analysis, computational mathematics, control and system science, differential equations, discrete mathematics,
dynamical systems and chaos, mathematical biology, mathematical education, number theory, and statistics.
The department also participates in the Master of Science (M.S.) degree in statistics, the Master of Natural Science (MNS) degree
for interdisciplinary study, and a Professional Science Masters (P.S.M.) Degree in Computational Biosciences.

Why Math@ASU
Rishu Saxena-PhD Candidate
"I chose the Math department at ASU because of the outgoing research in the field of "Applied Math" here. The faculty are very approachable and enthusiastic. The TA training, the PFMF and such other programs provide excellent grounds to prepare the graduate students for their careers ahead. The teaching exposure that we get here in a well supported ambience is of immense help to those interested in a career in teaching."
Rishu Saxena is a PhD Candidate working on High Order Methods for Edge Detection and Applications under Dr.Anne Gelb and Dr.Hans Mittelmann. Learn more about Rishu and her research.
Christopher Severs-Phd Candidate
"I visited ASU after I was accepted and spoke with the faculty at some length. The faculty I spoke with were very enthusiastic about their research and much of it was in areas I had interest in. The highlight of my trip was going to dinner with Dr. Hurlbert and having him explain many interesting problems and scribble them on the back of a napkin for me to take with me and think about.
When I visited I also got the impression that research groups worked together on many projects and interaction with other disciplines was a large part of the experience. This was very appealing to me and one of the primary reasons I decided to come to ASU."
Christopher Severs is a PhD Candidate working on computing the A-homotopy groups of generalized permutahedra under Dr.Helene Barcelo. Learn more about Chris's and his research.
