Deadlines

  • Applicants applying for TA support must have completed applications submitted no later than March 1 (fall admission) or October 1 (spring admission).
  • All graduate program applications must be completed at least three weeks before the semester of intended enrollment. Students whose applications are not complete can email the department to request a deferral for the next semester.
  • International applicants should allow an additional 4-6 weeks for I20 and visa processing.

Requirements

  1. Minimum background for consideration of admission to a graduate program in mathematics will include a Bachelor's degree in mathematics or a closely related area with a 3.00 Grade Point Average, and course work in linear algebra (MAT 342) and advanced calculus (MAT 371).
  2. Additional prerequisites may be required by individual program areas
  3. Deficiencies which are completed after admission cannot be used to satisfy graduate degree requirements.
  4. Provisional status is granted when the Department of Mathematics or the Graduate College requires additional evidence of an applicant's qualifications for admission with regular status. Final determination of status will be made when the student has addressed the provisions as stated in the original admission letter and takes the form of a memorandum to the Graduate College from the Director of Graduate Studies. No student is permitted to maintain provisional status indefinitely.

How to Apply

You can apply on-line to the graduate program on the Graduate College web site, http://www.asu.edu/graduate. You may check your application status with the Graduate College by using the ASU Interactive Website: www.asu.edu/interactive. Your privacy is protected by the use of an ASURITE UserID and password. If you are new to ASU, your ASURITE UserID and instructions for its activation can be found on your application acknowledgement letter.  If you need the application materials mailed to you, please send an email directly to the Graduate College Admissions office at grad-q@asu.edu.

The following items are required before an application is considered complete and ready for review by the Department of Mathematics & Statistics. All application materials should be submitted to the Graduate College (see their web page for mailing address) Graduate College Admissions.

  1. Submit your application to the Graduate College. http://www.asu.edu/graduate.
  2. Submit the appropriate application fee to the Graduate College. Please see their web page for fees
  3. Submit official transcripts to the Graduate College from all institutions you have attended.
  4. International students must submit an official TOEFL score to the Graduate College. Please see the Graduate College web page for English proficiency requirements . If you are applying for support as a TA by the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, we require a minimum TOEFL score of 600 (paper based) to be eligible to compete for support.
  5. Have official GRE test scores (general scores only; we do not require the subject test) sent to the Graduate College Admissions Office by ETS. The ASU Institution code is 4007.
  6. Submit three (3) letters of recommendation. Please use the form provided (doc) or (pdf). Additional letters are welcome.
  7. If you are applying for support as a TA, please fill out the TA application form provided (doc) or (pdf).
  8. A Statement of Purpose that specifically addresses your research interests and goals for graduate school.

Due to the number of applications we receive, you will not be notified by the Department until a decision has been made on your application. However you are encouraged to send regular emails to grad@math.asu.edu to inquire whether all the required materials have been received or whether your application is ready for review. Please include your name and ASU ID number on all correspondence to the Department.
