General Information Regarding Teaching Assistantships

To be an applicant for a Teaching Assistantship, you must either have English as your native language or have a TOEFL score of 600. Criteria used in making awards include academic records, letters of reference, and demonstrated ability in English, as measured by the TOEFL test. We like international students to take the TSE test if possible, however it is not absolutely necessary. All international students who are awarded a Teaching Assistantship must take the Arizona State University administered SPEAK test after arriving on campus. This test is similar to the TSE test. The results will determine the duties of the Teaching Assistant, either grading, tutoring, or teaching.

Teaching Assistantships in the Department of Mathematics are awarded the first of April of each year for the following academic year (fall and spring semesters). Some years it is even later. It is not until we know how many assistantships we will have available. Usually we are able to write by mid-April to inform you as to whether or not you have been awarded an assistantship. These positions are highly competitive, with many more applicants than there are assistantships available.

Applicants will not be considered for an assistantship until they have been admitted to the graduate program in mathematics. The application fee for admission must be paid to the Graduate College Admission office and cannot be waived. The student file will not be sent to the department for review until this fee has been paid and the file is complete.
