General Information

The Mathematics Placement Test

ASU requires all incoming freshmen to complete the Unified Placement Test (UPT) and enroll in the appropriate math course as determined by their score. Students who expect to enroll in calculus or higher math during their first semester also must take the Calculus Placement Exam and achieve a score of 36 or higher.

Critical Information About Math Placement

> Students must take the UPT no later than 72 hours before attending orientation. Those who attend orientation without having taken the exam will not be allowed to register for classes.

> The Unified Placement Test can be taken a maximum of two (2) times after May 5, 2008. If you have taken the test previously, you are allowed two additional attempts.

> All students are strongly advised to take the online practice test before attempting the exam. ASU also holds summer math refresher workshops on campus for students who would like additional assistance with reviewing key concepts.

Check Placement Test Scores

Students who score below 60 on the UPT must enroll in Intermediate Algebra through the Math Refresher Program during the first semester at ASU through the Math Refresher Program. Intermediate Algebra strengthens math skills and prepares students for the rigors of college mathematics. It is taught by the Maricopa County Community Colleges on the ASU campuses. To learn more, please see the Math Refresher Program website.

If your major requires calculus, scroll down to the Majors Requiring Calculus table. All other students, please use the Non-Calculus Track table.
