First-Year Math

First Year Mathematics (FYM) encompasses mathematics classes up to calculus and introductory statistics courses. These are the classes that satisfy university, college, and major requirements in mathematics and are the first courses for students wishing to major or minor in math.

The FYM faculty is devoted to the practice of teaching of mathematics and statistics and is one of the largest such faculties at a university.

Important Information About First-year Math Placement

ASU requires all incoming freshmen to complete a placement exam for mathematics prior to orientation in order to determine the appropriate math course for enrollment. Students whose degree objective does not include precalculus must take the Unified Placement Test (UPT) while those who expect to enroll in precalculus or higher math during their first semester must take the ALEKS Calculus Placement Exam prior to orientation. Placement into MAT 170, Precalculus, may be achieved by either UPT or ALEKS.
