MAT 194 - College Algebra STRETCH

Fall 2009

  • Prerequisites and Placement: Students must take Placement Test before enrolling in MAT 194. Students enrolling in MAT194 should have successfully completed the equivalent of a pre-algebra class and should have had some exposure to elementary algebra. It is essential that students in MAT194 have a command of basic arithmetic skills such as addition/subtraction, factoring, and fractions.
(See Minimum Mathematics Requirements for Academic Programs)
  • Purpose: MAT-194 combines the material from an elementary algebra class with college algebra. This 3-hour format course is not a prerequisite to College Algebra (MAT-117). It is an equivalent course. MAT-194 prepares students to take MAT-119 (Finite Math), MAT-170 (Precalculus) or MAT-210 (Business Calculus) and fulfills the algebra requirement for MTE-180. MAT-194 does not fulfill the ASU numeracy requirement for graduation.

  • Standard Syllabus: A suggested syllabus is (doc form). Each instructor may use a different syllabus to complete the Course Objectives. Check with your instructor.

  • Classroom Environment: Instructors strive to create an interactive atmosphere where active learning can take place. Students often work together in groups during class or on outside projects. Class sizes are limited to 19 students and no override for size can be given by either the instructor or the Mathematics and Statistics Department.

  • Attendance:
    • Attendance will be taken on a regular basis as studies have shown that students that attend class regularly are more likely to complete their courses successfully.

    • MAT 194 classes meet three days a week. (MWF) and the maximum number of allowed absences is six (6).

    • Students who exceed the maximum will receive a grade of EN.

  • Assessment: In addition to traditional tests, instructors may use a mixture of homework, quizzes, projects, assignments, and attendance.

  • Testing Center: · The Mathematics Testing Center is located in PSA-21 (basement). For exams given there you will need your ASU SunCard to be admitted. The hours are M-Th 8 am to 8 pm (last test handed out at 6:30) and Fridays from 8 am to 5 pm (last test handed out at 3:30 pm). You can find more information at Testing Center Information.

  • Tutor Center: The Math Tutor Center is located In PSA-116. You can get help with MAT 194, 117, 119, 142, 170, 210, 211, 251, and MTE 180 and 181. This is free, quality tutoring to all ASU students registered in those math classes. However, you must bring your SunCard . There is more information at Tutor Center Information .

  • MyMathLab: Homework will be submitted online via the internet using the online homework system MyMathLab. MyMathLab requires Windows and Internet explorer. It can be either your own computer or one in any of the ASU computer labs. To log onto MyMathLab, go to
    http://www.coursecompass.com
Further instructions regarding MyMathLab will be given in class.

  • Math Achievement Through Tutoring: To improve student success in MAT 194 students are required to complete 3 hours in the Tutor Center each week. Students must give the Supervisors a form, The Math Achievement Through Tutoring Form , each time they go to the Tutor Center to document their attendance.

  • Calculator: All sections of MAT 194 require a graphing calculator. The calculator is used to increase your understanding and generate interest in exploring the major concepts of the course. Many of the homework and exam questions will require the use of the calculator. During class you will use the calculator as a tool for investigating new ideas. Your instructor will provide demonstrations which will help you to visualize many of the mathematical ideas, including the use of a graphing calculator. Suggested calculators are the TI-83/84 and the Casio FX-9750G Plus.
