MAT 117 - College Algebra

FALL 2009

  • Prerequisites and Placement: Students MUST complete the Unified Placement Test with a score of 60 or higher or have completed MAT 106 or MAT 113 with a C or better. Students enrolling in MAT117 should have successfully completed the equivalent of MAT106 (Intermediate Algebra). It is essential that students in MAT117 have a command of basic algebraic skills such as factoring, basic equation solving, and a thorough knowledge of the rules of exponents and radicals.
  • Purpose: MAT117 prepares students to take MAT119 (Finite Math) , MAT170 (Precalculus), and MAT210 (Business Calculus). But MAT117 does not fulfill the ASU numeracy requirement for graduation.
  • Syllabus: A suggested syllabus is Syllabus (doc) or (pdf) Each instructor may use a different syllabus to complete the Course Objectives. Check with your instructor.
  • Attendance:
    • Attendance will be taken on a regular basis as studies have shown that students that attend class regularly are more likely to complete their courses successfully.
    • For classes that meet three days a week (MWF, for example), the maximum number of allowed absences is six (6). For classes that meet two days a week (TT for example) , the maximum number is four (4). For classes that meet once a week, the maximum number is two (2). For classes that meet on other schedules, the number of absences allowed should reflect a similar ratio (two weeks worth of class meetings).
    • Students who exceed the maximum will receive a grade of EN.
  • Assessment: In addition to traditional tests, instructors may use a mixture of homework, quizzes, projects, assignments, and attendance.
  • Testing Center: The Mathematics Testing Center is located in PSA-21 (basement). For exams given there you will need your ASU SunCard to be admitted. The hours are M-Th 9 am to 8 pm (last test handed out at 6:30) and Fridays from 9 am to 5 pm (last test handed out at 3:30 pm). You can find more information at Testing Center Information.
  • Tutor Center: Free, quality tutoring is available in PSA-116, the Math Tutor Center. In order to be admitted to the Math Tutor Center you must have your SunCard . For date and time of operation or for more information click on the following link. Tutor Center Information .
  • MyMathLab: Homework will be submitted online via the internet using the online homework system MyMathLab. It can be either your own computer or one in any of the ASU computer labs. To log onto MyMathLab, go to
    http://www.coursecompass.com
Further instructions regarding MyMathLab will be given in class.
  • Calculator: All sections of MAT 117 require a graphing calculator. The calculator is used to increase your understanding and generate interest in exploring the major concepts of the course. Many of the homework and exam questions will require the use of the calculator. During class you will use the calculator as a tool for investigating new ideas. It is essential that you attend one of the graphing calculator workshops at the beginning of the semester. This will help and enhance your ability to integrate the calculator in exploring the concepts of college algebra. Recommended calculators are the TI-83/84 series and the Casio FX-9750G Plus.
