Self Advisement for Entry-level ASU Mathematics Courses

Step 1: Find your college or major on the reverse side of this sheet in Table 2 or consult the general ASU catalog to determine the minimum mathematics requirements appropriate for your intended degree program.

Step 2: In the table below find the highest-level course you have taken in high school or at a community college in the top row. Next, find the grade you earned in that course in the first column. The cell where the row and column meet indicate the course(s) you are most likely qualified to take.

Step 3: Refer to Mathematics Placement Test Information below on this sheet to determine which placement test is best for you. If possible take the placement test on line at http://fym.la.asu.edu/placement.

Step 4: The following flow chart shows the prerequisite structure for the mathematics courses through calculus. Use the information from steps 1 and 2 above to determine which path to follow in order to meet your particular requirements.
Note: MAT 170 and MAT 113 (College Algebra Plus) can be substituted for MAT 117 prerequisite.

Mathematics Placement Test Information

A Unified Placement Test is available to help you determine which Math course (MAT 106-Intermediate Algebra; MAT 117-College Algebra; or MAT 170-Precalculus) you are prepared for. All students enrolling in MAT 106, MAT 117 and MAT 170 are required to take the Placement Test. This test is available on the web at http://fym.la.asu.edu/placement or it may be taken in person with pencil and paper at the Math Testing Center in PSA 21. Current times when the Testing Center is available for placement testing are posted at the above website.
