Objectives of Chapter 5: Understanding
Integer Operations
Students will be
able to:
o
use
real-world situations to illustrate/model the meaning of an integer;
o
use
equations to demonstrate the mathematical need for integers;
o
use
models and mathematical reasoning to explain integer operations;
o
identify
the properties of integer addition and multiplication;
o
compare
two integers and order a set of integers;
o
choose
an addition or multiplication equation and verify it using the basic
properties;
o
state
the absolute value of a number;
o
state
the opposite (additive inverse) or a given number;
o
illustrate
and explain addition and subtraction of integers using the two-colored chip
model, the pattern model, the charged-particle model, and/or the number line
model; and
o
given two integers, determine which is
greater and explain and/or illustrate why.
