Major Objectives of the Chapter 3:  Estimation and Computation

Students will be able to:

o       choose, accurately apply, and explain mental math techniques for finding sums, products, differences, and quotients;

o       choose, accurately apply, and explain estimation techniques for estimating sums, products, differences, and quotients;

o       accurately carry out in reasonable time and explain the traditional paper-and-pencil algorithms for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers;

o       apply and explain alternative algorithms for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers

o       illustrate and explain the use of base-ten blocks and other algorithms to solve an addition or subtraction problem

o       illustrate and explain the use of base-ten blocks for multiplication and division

o       illustrate and explain multiplication using rectangular arrays, repeated addition

o       illustrate and explain division using the set (partition), missing-factor, friendly division, and/or repeated-subtraction models

o       use the count on and count back, the compatible numbers, breaking apart, compensation or equal addition techniques to mentally add or multiply numbers

o       use a variety of methods to estimate addition or multiplication.
