MAT 170 - Precalculus

Spring 2008

  • Prerequisites: (1) A grade of 'C' or better in College Algebra MAT 117 or (2) equivalent to MAT 117 and completion of the department Unified Placement Exam. The placement exam is taken online and must be completed by the end of the first week of classes.

  • It is essential that students in MAT 170 have a command of basic algebraic skills such as factoring, basic equation solving, thorough knowledge of the rules of exponents and radicals.

  • Purpose: MAT 170 is intended to prepare students to take MAT 270 (Calculus I) or MAT 265 (Engineering Calculus I). Hence the course emphasizes the fundamental concept of a function throughout. Precalculus is also the only course offered that teaches trigonometry. Some majors have a trigonometry requirement which can only be satisfied by completing MAT 170.

  • Classroom Enviroment: The course is closely coordinated, insuring a uniform experience for all students. Instructors work to create an interactive atmosphere where active learning can take place. Students often work in groups during class time and sometimes work together on outside projects.

  • Testing Center: The Mathematics Testing Center is located in PSA-21 (basement). For exams given there you will need your ASU SunCard to be admitted. The hours are M-Th 8 am to 8 pm (last test handed out at 6:30) and Fridays from 8 am to 5 pm (last test handed out at 3:30 pm). You can find more information at Testing Center Information.

  • Tutor Center: The Math Tutor Center is located In PSA-116. You can get help with MAT 113, 117, 119, 142, 170, 210, 211, 251, and MTE 180 and 181. This is free, quality tutoring to all ASU students registered in those math classes. However, you must bring your SunCard . There is more information at Tutor Center Information .

  • MyMathLab: Some sections may use the online homework assessment tool called MyMathLab. The website for MyMathLab is http://www.coursecompass.com. In order to use MyMathLab you will need a computer running MS-Windows with access to the MS-Internet Explorer web browser. In order to register for MyMathLab, you must have an ACCESS CODE and a Course ID. The ACCESS CODE can be purchased with a new textbook or online at http://www.mymathlab.com/register.html and clicking on "purchasing online access". The Course ID will be supplied to you by your instructor.

  • Calculator: A graphing calculator is required for this course. If you already have a calculator, you may use it. If not, please talk to your instructor for a recommendation. Calculators with QWERTY keyboards or those that do symbolic algebra, such as the Casio FX2, Casio 9970Gs, TI-89 or TI-92 cannot be used in class or during an exam. Calculator Help
