Questions & Answers Regarding the Final
1) When and Where is my final?
Your MAT 117 final is on Saturday, August 9. (We will start at 10:00 am, so please arrive on time. If you are late, unfortunately you will just have less time to complete the exam. All exams will be collected at noon).
Location of Final: To Be Announced Please click on the link for a map of the campus if needed. Map.
It is a good idea to either locate the room prior to the final, or come early the day of the final to give yourself time to find the exam
I will be proctoring the final and the only other
students in the classroom at this time will be those from the
sections of this course that I teach.
REMINDER: As stated in the syllabus, the final exam make-up policy is as follows:
The final exam schedule listed in the Schedule of Classes will be strictly followed. Exceptions to the schedule and requests for make-up examinations (must be done ahead of time) can be granted only by the Department Chair, Associate Department Chair or the Director of First Year Mathematics, and for one of the following reasons:
1. Religious conflict (e.g., the student celebrates the Sabbath on Saturday)
2. The student has more than three exams scheduled on the same day as the math final
3. There is a time conflict between the math final and another final exam.
2) What do I need to bring to the final?
Please bring to the final the following:
a) Your ASU SUN Card ID (You will not get an exam if you do not have your ID with you)
b) Graphing Calculator (except any calculator which does symbolic algebra (i.e.: TI-89, TI-92, Casio FX-2, etc.))
c) Pencils and erasers
3) Can I bring in a formula sheet to the final?
I am sorry, no.
4) What is on the final?
The final is comprehensive and covers all the material throughout the course. See MAT 117 Final Concept List for a complete list of the topics you should prepare for.
The breakdown of the final is as follows (Approximately)
50% Material from the midterm
50% from material since midterm (10% rational functions, 15% logs and exponents, 10% systems of equations and 15% series)
Currently the final has 20 problems and there are NO multiple choice problems on the final (Show all work).
The final is designed to be completed in the time scheduled for the exam (including time to look over and check your work).
Remember, the final is 25% of your grade!!!!
5) How should I prepare for the final?
All the concepts on the final are posted on the MAT 117 Final Concept List.
The semester summary is located at http://math.asu.edu/~mohacsy/internet-mat-117/final/formula-mat-117.pdf"
The review problems are located at http://math.asu.edu/~mohacsy/internet-mat-117/final/review-mat-117.pdf"
The solutions for the review problems is located at http://math.asu.edu/~mohacsy/internet-mat-117/final/review-mat-117-solution.pdf"
For each concept listed, look them up in your text and/or Lecture notes for review. Then, review /redo the problems in the homework and Web Tests that pertain to that concept.
After you are done with a problem you should think about the method you used to solve it. You really want to be able to UNDERSTAND how you came up with the solution. (A lot of students just get caught up in trying to memorize the mechanics of how to do something without really understand it). Also, you might think - Was there any other way I could have solved this problem ? (This won't apply to everyone problem, however say for example the problem asked you to find the vertex of a quadratic function. You might have solve it algebraically by completing the square and putting it in the standard form. Afterwards you can review that you also could have solved it algebraically by using the formula, x = -b/(2a) to find the x-coordinate and then substituting it back into the function to find the y-coordinate. You can also find the vertex graphically by plugging the function into the calculator and finding the max. or min. value. All these approaches should give you the same answer). For any problems you have questions with, go back to the textbook and/or lecture notes to review the concepts and try them again.
Make a list of any concepts or problems you need help on and please get your questions answered (via me, on-line tutoring, or tutoring center (if you live close to campus)).
Don't wait until the night before to study for the final! There is a lot of material on the final, so start studying now. I recommend studying/reviewing a few concepts every night until the final and give yourself time to get your questions answered.
6) I live close to ASU Main campus. Will the Math Tutor Center be open for tutoring during exam week?
The hours during finals that the tutor center will be open are as follows :
7) Will I get my final back?
Unfortunately, no one will get their final back. It is departmental policy that no finals are returned to the students. No answer key can be posted either.
If you have a question(s) about a particular problem, I will be happy to answer any of your questions after the final and after all the finals have been collected.
8) When will final grades be posted?
Once I have completed grading all the finals I will post grades off the same link I have been posting grades all semester (Link is located on myASU )
I will send out an e-mail to the class once the
grades have been posted.
